Watch Out For That Bear

I was searching for some cards to complete a trade and as I do quite often I got distracted with a particular card. This time it was a 1997 Metal Universal Brett Favre. When Metal Universe first arrived I was a bit embarrassed to admit I liked the odd, bumpy, shiny cards. So I secretly purchased packs every time I had the chance no matter what the sport was. The Hockey versions of Metal Universe were really great looking with the vibrant colors of the uniforms, especially the goalies.

Back to the Bear and Favre, for whatever reason this time I became mesmerized with the bear in the background. The Bears are one of the Packers rivals so I get it that they used a bear. But, the Packers and Bears are fierce Rivals it would have been more fitting to use a Bear in an aggressive pose instead of looking like a puppy dog standing behind his master. I wondered who decided to use a calm bear on all fours instead of a gnarling bear standing up with his front paws lashing out for Brett? Was the designer a Packer fan, if so why didn’t he have Favre standing on a bear skin rug? Maybe the image was the only one of a bear on their 10,000 fonts and graphics cd for $9.99.?

I do like the pose of Favre looking downfield to throw the deep ball. They also did a pattern that reminds me of snowfall across the card. They just should have at least had the bear showing some teeth and this would have been a truly outstanding card.

I got to looking around on Ebay to see if any of the other cards had their rivals mascot in the backgrounds of the cards. What I found was a great looking Terrell Owens with a I don’t know what background. Terry Glenn has a bunch of flying footballs coming at him, Jimmy Smith was entangled in a frogs tongue, Warrick Dunn is escaping a giant wave, Corey Dillon is running through fire and Elways card looks like he may be by throwing on the shore by a Rocky Mountain stream.

If you are a comic book fan this set has something for you too. One of the insert sets is called Marvel Metal Universe featuring Spider Man, Captain America and Wolverine. There may be more comic book heroes but these were the only ones I could find without more research. Some of the players featured with these comic book figures are Troy Aikman, John Elway, Terry Glenn, Jerry Rice and Steve McNair to name a few.

Once again a simple search for some cards to trade had me spending nearly an hour with a set I had long forgot about.
