Shopping on CheckoutMyCards.com

I first ran across Checkoutmycards.com back in October of 2007 and I made some initial inquiries to Tim Getsch the founder. Tim got back to me promptly with more information on the site and some of his plans as they moved forward with the site. I bookmarked the site and checked in with them on occasion ever since. I found it was a great site to visit when I needed to see a scan of a card to see what it looked like. They also allow you to use their scans on your site with the handy html code that you can just copy and paste.

I finally made a purchase on the site recently and the cards arrived on Saturday. They were packaged well and landed in my mailbox in only four working days from the time of my order. The cards were just as described and I am happy with my new additions. One of which is a Short Print I needed for my Turkey Red set, another was a nice Kinsler I didn’t have and the third knocks another off my list of 2006 UD Special F/X Star Attractions inserts. I will have scans and will post more on these as soon as I get my scanner to cooperate.

The folks at CheckOutMyCards also included a coupon with my order. They are celebrating their first year in business and gave me a coupon I can use to list my first 100 cards for sale on their site. Thats a $20 value as they charge twenty cents per card to scan the front and backs, look up the book values and load them to your online inventory. I would then login and set my asking prices. When the cards sell they handle the payment processing and shipping. I can then take the credit I am issued for the cards that sell, (you get the full amount of the sale no commission) and use it to buy cards on the site or pay for additional cards to be listed. You can also take your credit in cash but there is a commission charge on that. The commission rate is 20% and if you cash out less than $25 there is another $1 charge.

I really like the idea of not having to scan and load every card myself plus not having to handle the shipping. But, I just don’t know if I will take them up on their coupon offer or not. Are any of you selling on CheckOutMyCards? Has it been worth it for you? In looking at the Top Sellers on the site one of them has over $150,000 in book value on the site and the next two have over $50,000 listed. The top guy has over 61,000 cards listed for sale and he has sold 17% of his inventory. Another seller with over 5,000 cards listed has sold 56% of his inventory.

This coupon expires on October 31, 2008 so I will make up my mind before then to try them out or not. If I send them a hundred cards by then with the coupon I would only be out what it costs me to ship the cards to them. Here are some other notes they passed along on the back of the coupon:

  • Two employees last year now over Ten

  • Seven sellers last year now over Two Hundred

  • User accounts have grown to over Four Thousand

  • Cards on Consignment rose from 3,642 to over 200,000

  • Last year 30,000 different visitors Now over 500,000

  • Page views have grown from 800,000 to 20 Million Plus

I too have been debating sending cards to this site. It looks like a great idea but I wonder if my cards will sell and if it is worth the processing fees. I look forward to more reader comments…..who has used this site?

  2. Joey Says:

Thanks for stopping by Michael. Another thing about selling on Check Out My Cards is that you don’t have your cards in your possession anymore. You can get them back but sometimes you might want them quickly for an offline sale or trade. I have over 9,000 cards on Sportlots and I do trade them or sell them offline on occassion.

  3. IVSPORT Says:

Joey. I’m confused. Are you saying that to post your card collection to Check Out My Cards, that you have to send them the cards for them to keep until a sale is made? That seems excessive.

    Morning,

I have been selling on CheckOutMyCards.com for almost a year now. I like so many of you: I was unsure if sending my cards into a site where they controled everything was both safe and wise on my part, so I would check out the site and keep an eye on how things would work. After alittle time pasted I decided to send in a “handful” of my lesser valued cards and try them out.
Since I put my cards on, I have bought MANY cards from other dealers and sold even more. I have had Tim transfer my funds to my Paypal account and requested cards shipped to me, during all of these transactions I have NEVER had a problem. Tim runs one of the most professional sites I have ever seen, he takes great pride in his work and the work he and his group puts into the site.
I plan on sending in my next group of cards by the end of the month and by the end of the year I hope to have around 10,000 cards on the site.
If anyone is thinking about sending their cards in but are not sure PLEASE rest assured your cards will be in the hands of professionals and great care will be taken to ensure your peace of mind.

  6. Joey Says:

IVSPORT, yep thats how it works. They scan them and load them to the site. All you have to do is set the price. When a card sells they collect the payment and ship the card. It is a totally different business model than Ebay or Sportlots for example.

Dave, thank you for sharing your experience. Are you selling on any other sites too?

  7. Derek Says:

I think if more people knew about C.O.M.C they would be dominating the sports cards industry on the internet. Awesome site which still has developing features and only small fees for letting them do all of the work. It’s still not a well-known site yet, but it’ll have to be the responsibility of the current users of the site to spread by word of mouth so that it attracts more users. Give it another year and I guarantee it will have tripled in users and popularity.

I have been selling on this site for about nne months now and could not be happier. I am not a dealer, just a guy who collected now and then. I have sent in just over 1,000 cards and have had a steady flow of sales since. I cannot say what a delight it has been selling my collection this way. A finer group of people you will not find anywhere. I do ask for lower prices on my stock as I am motivated to sell. There is almost instant communication with Tim Getsch anytime you have a concern or question. Try them out, you wont be sorry !!!

I have been dealing with Check Out My Cards.Com for about 8 month now and am very satisfied. I have bought cards and sold cards. They do a supurb job and have and excellent means of recording the transactions.

There are a couple of improvements I’d like to see. One is to be able to list the cards somewhat faster. It took over 3 weeks for my last batch that I submitted to be put online.
Another is their means of card selection. They do not allow any cards with any slight crease or bent corner. So I’ve run into situations with a nice card that has a very slight hairline crease being rejected eventhough it may have sharp corners and good color and grade VG+ being rejected, and other cards that had well rounded corners, with poor coloring or slight spots , poor centering that graded only GOOD being acepted.

I found Checkoutmycards.com on one of those google ads in my gmail account a few months back. I was a little skeptical at first so I sent in around 100 cards for my first go around. I have added another 200 to that and I plan to send in another 200-400 soon(I also have the coupon). I have been able to move cards that I have held for years. They send updates on prices almost each month, they email when something sells or if you have offers. Like it said above they take the time to search and scan the cards and have the jumbo shots so you can see if there are really any immperfections on the cards. I am moving most of my collection to them. I hope they continue to grow with more sellers and buyers. Tim and his crew keep updating the site to make it friendlier and easier to use and search. I have also purchased about a handful of cards and had one shipped. It is a great idea and model. Saves ne time of posting and scanning for ebay and other sites, saves me the time and money of the post office everyday, and they hold the cards for you so the clutter of the cards in my house is going away!
Don’t fear COMCs, they are one of the best that I have dealt with in a long time.

At a minimum I would suggest everyone to try buying on the Checkoutmycards.com website. There is a great selection and the postage is only $2.00 +$/20/card no matter how many sellers that you purchase from. Packaging is great and the delivery is fast (4 days WA to MI). Even the invoice in the package is top notch.

I have just started to sell on the COMC site (ID = Tigers1984WS) and have moved several cards that I would have no chance of moving at a show. I have bought a whole bunch of cards in the hope of flipping them on the site (have succeeded in already flipping 3 cards bought for $2.50 that sold for $6.48).

    Hi Joey,

I am only selling on CheckOutMyCards.com.. I have found that they are the best site out there. I have looked at others BUT they seem to fall short of my needs.
During this past year of posting and selling i have also been able to build my inventory by better then $9,000 by buying cards from other collectors and dealers on the site.
Tim and his team have all other site beat hands down as far as i am concerned.

    Dave

  13. Joey Says:

Derek, thanks for stopping by and sharing your comments.

Trackman54, sounds like you are another satisified seller. I think you guys are winning me over.

J.Ammon, thanks for stopping by and adding your thoughts. Maybe as the site grows they will add off grade cards.

  14. Joey Says:

Doug, I am liking the not having to go to the Post Office part too. Thanks for stopping by.

Chris H, thats pretty cool that you have been able to flip cards on the same platform for a profit. I have bought stuff on Sportlots and flipped on Ebay and vice versa but I haven’t had much success flipping on the same site.

Dave, glad to hear you are another happy COMC seller. Everyone I have heard from on this post and other communications says the same good things about Tim and his Staff.

  15. Phil Bamber Says:

I’ve only purchased off the site, but all of my exsperiences have been great!! Cheap shipping prices, quick delivery times and the cards are always in fab condition!

  16. Joey Says:

Hey Phil, thanks for chiming in.

  17. Scott Says:

I was referred to this blog from COMC’s blog and wanted to put my 2 cents worth.

I first came across COMC surfing the internet one day and was skeptical at first as everybody usually is with the site. I decided to ship in a handful of cards that would end up sitting collecting dust in my cardboard boxes. Right off the bat, they were processed and I was on my way of selling cards. From there I’ve ended up shipping in more and more cards and use the funds that I earn from my sales to pay for cards for my personal collections.

Thank god for that day I crawled into the site from a search engine, otherwise I wouldn’t have a reliable source of building my P.C.’s. I look forward for COMC’s growth and hope they set a model for the collecting community.

  18. Joey Says:

    Hey Scott,

Thanks for joining the conversation. Its great to hear from folks that are having a good experience.

  19. Blyleven82 Says:

Hope this topic is still active…

    Hi,
i came across the COMC-site on google, looking for a place to sell my baseball cards. I´ve got a small selection (about 300) of cards available in Europe in the 90´s (like Score94, Upperdeck95, Topps94). I don´t reckon these are highly sought after. Do you guys think, since it´s such a small collection, it would still be worth the effort (would i make more than the costs that is) sending these to the site, and having to pay shipping from the Netherlands plus the scanning costs per card?
    Regards, Tom

  20. Joey Says:

Hi Blyleven82, thanks for stopping by. Those cards will be a tough sell on any site. There are thousands available online at sites like Sportlots, Check Out My Cards, Beckett, Ebay and others. I am guessing that you have mostly common cards with maybe some inserts mixed in.

If most of the cards you have are piced below a quarter online it takes a bunch of sales to offset the expenses. I have over 10,000 cards listed at Sportlots. Some months I do okay and some months I wonder why I bother. Most of those 10,000 cards are under a quarter in price. When I have someone purchase one card for their set or player collection I really don’t make any money. What I hope to get with that many cards online are multiple purchases from the same buyer. That helps drive down my expenses.

All that said, take an inventory of your cards. Then figure out what they are priced at on other sites. That will help you figure out if you stand a chance at coming out even at least.

  21. Blyleven82 Says:

Thanks for the quick reply, Joey! I had my cards stored away somewhere and found them again a while back, i thought maybe a ´homerun hero Barry Bonds´ card for example would be worth something by now, but having compared prices, im afraid it´s not….. think i might sell them as a set on ebay, or just keep em.
    Thanks again!

  22. Joey Says:

    Anytime Blyleven82.

  23. Dean Says:

Hey Joey… Maybe I’m just a little bit slow, but I think I just need things spelled out for me.

I have 1,639 cards (mostly inserts, GU, stars, RCs, etc… that I’d like to send in to COMC. The total BV is $4,800+. That’s an average of almost $3/card. If I asked for about 80% off for most cards under $5 and gradually decreased the discount for higher BV’s and increased the discount for lower BV’s, how do you think I would make out in a given month? I know this requires alot of guesswork on your part, but could you please approximate for me? Also assume I will be getting the word out online about my collection.

Break it down for me… What would my starting fees be, how many cards roughly do you think I would sell in a month, what would be my selling fees for cards sold, how much do you think I might make in a month?

I really just need a sense of the numbers. Thanks so much! Waiting patiently for your response.

    -Dean
