2008 Upper Deck Clay Buchholz
I picked up a blister pack of 2008 Upper Deck Baseball at Walmart while grocery shopping last night. I am not a big fan of the design this year but I just like to open stuff so I grabbed one. I didn’t get anything real great. This Buchholz card inspired me to write a quick little post though.
I like player cards that have scoreboards in the background. Although this particular scoreboard is the narrow one that separates seating levels I think it still is a nice photo. The card celebrates Buchholz’s no hitter last season against the Orioles, becoming the 21st Rookie since 1900 to throw a no hitter. If they would take out the silver foil I would like this card even more.
My favorite player scoreboard photo is the 1991 Topps Roger Clemens #530. Even with the Steroid issue getting bigger right now this is still my favorite scoreboard card. Speaking of Roger I also got a Troy Patton Rookie card in this pack. Troy is peering in over the top of his black glove looking for the sign. Troy is also from Texas and is in the Astros system.

Um…
Patton was one of the guys Houston traded to Baltimore for Tejada.

Thanks Jason. Boy around here most people feel that Houston really made a mistake with the Tejada trade, and that was even before the steroid news.

That is a great Clemens card. Then again, I’m partial to anything with the Green Monster in it.
I was at that historic Buchholz performance and will probably track down all of the cards this season that’ll be released to commemorate the event.
The strange thing about this card is that I don’t think that they could have gotten this image without some Photoshopping so why not put the Green Monster in behind Clay instead of this one with burnt out lightbulbs. I’ve had seats right behind the third base pit and I don’t think this picture is possible even from way down there. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for bringing that up Mike. My first impression of this card is that it was photoshopped. If it is an actual photo maybe the photographer was shooting while laying on the ground. I doubt that.
Wow, it must have been great to be at that game. Maybe you could write a guest post for my blog about the experience and your desire to collect cards commemorating the event?

Hi Joey, Have you seen the 2008 Topps Clay Buchholz RC?
It looks like it was taken from the game against the O’s and you could see the score board in the backgorund as well.

Hey Graham, when I pulled the Topps card from a pack I was trying to figure out if it was from the same game. Thanks for joining in the conversation.
