Excuses for Selling Off Your Collection
I was just browsing around Ebay this weekend not looking for anything in particular but just checking out some listings. I got interested in the listings where someone is selling off their entire collection or huge lots they purchased somewhere. I have never bought one of these but I have bid on a few. How about you, have you ever bought one?
Listed below for your browsing pleasure are some of the auction titles that really stood out to me. The reasons they stand out speak for themselves, I know many of you have seen these on the bay before. Which one is your favorite?

Alimony sale! Ex girlfriend’s old sport card collection
Most of them are some kind of dutch auction where for a small price you get a small group of cards and the chance to get something really valuable. Human nature is that we all want something for nothing so these types of auctions work pretty well for many sellers. In looking at the feedback you will see some entries from people that pulled something really nice and some that were not happy or downright angry. Still others will not comment at all or just make generic comments of a good deal.
You can find some store closings and such where all is for sale for one winning bid but these are tougher to find. Sometimes collectors will turn to a one shot auction to get rid of everything too. If you are looking to buy large lots take a look at Craigslist. Browse to the areas you would be willing to drive to and do a search. I just did a quick check in the Dallas area and came up with several listings for lots of a few hundred to nearly a million cards as one poster said in his ad. Have you bought any cards on Craigslist?
By the way my favorite auction title from the list above was, I love my wife but I still have cards I would like to sell.

I just bought a couple the “Store Closed” deals. I have received the first one, and there are about 6000 cards, pretty evenly split between baseball and football with some basketball and hockey thrown in for good measure. There are some auto’d, game-used, and lots of ‘insert’ cards (insert/parallel/whatever non-base). And, there are tons of commons. I am going to (try to) sell everything except Tribe cards, and once I determine which Tribes are dupes, I’ll sell those too. I have never bought a large lot like this before, but I wanted to try it specifically for the purpose of reselling it, just to see how I fair. Yeah, plopping down a couple hunded bucks on a risk may be, well, risky, but it’s cheaper than a ‘Vette….

David,
Good luck with the lots. Maybe you can do a post series about the process on your blog. Have fun sorting the cards.
