Week 1 of the Weekly $10 Wax Pack Challenge

Packs

This weekend was supposed to be opening weekend for the new card shop in town. However, when I went to the store on Saturday it had a new sign that said opening July 21st. I had hoped to start the Weekly $10 Wax Pack Challenge with a few hobby packs purchased from the shop. Since the shop was not open yet I returned home to mow my yard. While mowing I decided to go ahead and start the challenge anyway, I would just have to purchase retail packs until the store opened. This was not my first choice however because I hate to buy loose packs at retail because of the issue of pack searching and tampering.

Okay, with only $10 to spend and limited selection at WalMart that didn’t leave me with a lot to choose from. I had only bought a handful of Series 2 Topps wax packs so I grabbed three of them. I also got one pack of 2007 Playoff Prestige football. I had a dollar left so I picked out one pack of Topps Opening Day Baseball. I opened the Opening Day pack first. It yielded two mascot cards, David Wright, David Eckstein, Carl Crawford and a Vlad Guerrero puzzle card. I will place all six of these cards on Sportlots for sale.

Next I opened the 2007 Topps Baseball Series Two packs. The firs pack yielded a Russel Martin Topps All Star Rookie Card, this will go in my personal collection. The next cards were Oliver Perez, John Garland, Angel Sanchez RC, Ramon Martinez, Washington Nationals, Josh Fogg, Howie Kendrick, Joe DiMaggio the Streak (inserted 1:9 packs), Jeremy Hermida, Adrian Beltre and Jason Larue. For me this was a good pack just because of the Martin card I need for my set.

The second pack of Series Two contained Paul Byrd, Alexi Casilla RC, Fausto Carmona, David Dellucci, Kelly Johnson, (unusual photo showing him swinging a bat in the stands), Dan Haren, Michael Young, Luis Gonzalez Hit Parade (inserted 1:9 packs), Alex Cora, Matt Diaz, Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Giles.

The third pack of Series Two reveals Eric Milton, Akinori Iwamura RC, Mike Lamb, Colorado Rockies, Ben Zobrist, Classic Combo Beltran/Reyes, Juan Encarnacion, Adam Dunn, Daisuke Matsuzaka Japanese Version RC, Brian McCann, Johnny Peralta and Jeff Weaver. The Topps Series Two packs were pretty good as a whole. I got one card for my personal collection along with pulling two inserts that are inserted at a ratio of 1:9 packs, also pulling a Dice K SP Rookie. I will place the Dice K on Ebay, Russel Martin All Star Rookie goes in my notebook and the rest of the cards go on Sportlots.

Opening the 2007 Playoff Prestige pack last the first card is DeShaun Foster followed by Chris Chambers, NFL Draft card of Craig Davis (inserted 1:40 packs), Jarrett Hicks Rookie and Philip Rivers. This was a decent pack considering pulling a 1:40 shot insert although not a great insert. All of these cards will go on Sportlots.

I will keep you posted on what happens with the cards that are listed for sale. Only one will go on Ebay with the rest going on Sportlots. Also, only one card going into my personal collection. You can view the status page for the challenge by clicking here. Be sure and let me know what you think I should buy this week. Also, if you have any ideas on changes we can make to the series I would love to hear them. Just use the comments or the contact form.
